Key Takeaways:

  • Ledger and a new partnership with Payward have brought xStocks to the Ledger wallet ecosystem.
  • Eligible Ledger holders can trade hundreds of U.S. and worldwide stocks without any custodial requirements.
  • In crypto, xStocks now has over $42 billion of transactions to its credit, indicating how fast tokenized equities are growing, says Payward.

Tokenized stocks are increasingly embedding in crypto’s self-custody ecosystem. Payward, the company behind xStocks and parent of Kraken, has teamed up with Ledger to bring hundreds of tokenized equities to Ledger Wallet, giving eligible users onchain access to stocks beyond traditional market hours.

xStocks Lands Inside Ledger Wallet

The integration links two marketplaces, transforming the Ledger’s environment of hardware-backed custody into Payward’s market xStocks. Users who qualify are allowed to purchase, sell and pass on supported tokenized equities without having to compromise on their wallet keys.

The integration includes hundreds of tokenized equities from U.S. and global markets, Payward said. According to the company, xStocks are 1:1-backed representations of publicly traded shares, with the aim of moving beyond blockchain-enabled transfers and instantaneous market access for equity exposure.

But the partnership introduces an extra layer of security for Kraken users. The only transactions that are supported might need to be signed by a Ledger device and require a physical confirmation before assets move.

$42B xStocks Volume Sets the Scale

Payward claimed xStocks has reached over $42 billion in transaction volumes combined. The number does not represent XSTH sizes owned by users on Ledger but the amount of activity held on the xStocks ecosystem.

xStocks is also spread out on intent trading venues. On the HyperCore, five different tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs went live in August, bringing the framework to a native spot-market order-book environment.

Tokenized Equities Move Into Self-Custody

With the integration of the Ledger, users will now have the possibility to store their tokenized stocks. Eligible users are now able to interact with trading and transaction services while self-custody using Ledger’s infrastructure.

Especially in the context of crypto users who are used to managing their own private keys. Ledger’s hardware wallets have ensured that signing credentials have been kept separate from Internet connections, and transactions are still authorized by the individual on the device.

The companies are trying to link self-custody to trading and the wider financial system, Payward co-CEO David Ripley said.

xStocks Pushes Beyond U.S. Stocks

Payward is broadening its focus from the U.S. equity market to other stocks. The company joined with GTN to expand it to international equities in July, starting with assets listed on the Hong Kong exchange before moving onto other markets, such as the U.K., Europe and South Korea.

The partnership also included the London Stock Exchange in September to conduct research into the possibility of tokenizing public equities and launching trading on LSE 24 (upon regulatory approval).

The addition means that the growing, tokenized-equity economy is accessible to Ledger users alongside cryptocurrencies in their self-custody wallets.
